5 June - World Environment Day!
5 June is the World Environment Day!
On 5 June Batumi has hosted the World Environment Day event. The event was organized by the Union “Green Way” with the support of UNDP and under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Georgia. The event was dedicated to the raising concerns of Climate Change and the main slogan was: “Change Your Lifestyle, Not the Climate!”
The climate change is a complex problem. Unlike other problems, everyone contributes to the climate change and its effects touch also everyone! Everyone, who travels with car or plane and/or uses the electricity derived from fossil fuel, contributes to the raising of greenhouse gases concentration. Accordingly, the climate change is influencing all of us.
Therefore, in the frame of the event the organizers have aimed to draw public attention to the raising problems of the climate change and to demonstrate simple ways for mitigation of the climate change problems.
In the frame of the event there was organized Fancy Actions with participation of bicyclers in Batumi Boulevard. Another team of the volunteers was occupied with the drawing of the banner that filled with different environmental message and slogans. Besides, the population had the possibility to make the photos with banner. By this activity the organizers wanted to draw the attention of the population regarding climate change problems and to acquaint with simple examples of the resolving of climate change problems. These photos will last for long time and always remind them that all of us can make input in the mitigation of the climate change.
One of the main attributes of the event was the “Earth Cake”, which at first was decorated with “polluting factors”, such as factories, cars, airplanes and so on. With assisting of the organizers and population from the “Earth Cake” was taken out some pollutants and it was decorated with trees, wind turbines, bicycles, etc.
In the evening there was organized the Green Café with participation of local NGOs, students, local governmental structures, media, etc. There was organized the discussion regarding climate change problems and was shown the film “Stories from Racha” prepared by UNDP.
Batumi was selected as action venue considering the fact that it is one of the priority region in Georgia in terms of climate change. In Georgia there have been identified 3 main priority regions and Batumi and seaside of Georgia is one of them. There is a growing concern of sea level rise and land loses there. Adlia settlement (near Batumi) is clear evidence of this situation.
